Welding Quality Specialist (CWI Required)

Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Welding Quality Specialist (CWI) to serve as the technical authority and owner of the company’s welding program. This role is responsible for establishing, governing, and maintaining welding standards in accordance with AWS D1.1. The position exercises independent judgment in interpreting code requirements, approving welding procedures, and making decisions that materially impact compliance, liability, and operational direction.

 

The Welding Quality Specialist will focus primarily on welding governance, systems development, and program oversight while partnering with Production, Engineering, and Quality leadership to ensure scalable, compliant fabrication practices.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Own and govern the company’s welding program, including development, qualification, and revision control of WPS, PQR, and welder qualification records
  • Exercise independent authority to interpret and apply AWS D1.1 requirements and approve or reject welding procedures and practices
  • Make technical decisions impacting structural compliance, regulatory adherence, and operational risk
  • Lead welding program governance, documentation systems, and internal compliance audits
  • Establish and maintain welder continuity tracking and qualification standards
  • Perform and oversee visual weld inspections to ensure compliance with engineering drawings and code requirements
  • Identify process gaps and implement corrective actions to reduce weld-related nonconformance
  • Standardize welding parameters and equipment settings across production lines
  • Coordinate NDT activities and review acceptance criteria
  • Train and coach welders and inspectors on WPS adherence and quality expectations

 

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Active CWI certification
  • 5+ years structural welding experience
  • Demonstrated experience developing or qualifying WPS/PQR
  • Strong knowledge of AWS D1.1
  • Blueprint, weld symbol, and GD&T proficiency

 

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience implementing welding quality systems in a growing fabrication environment
  • Prior experience supporting ISO 9001 environments
  • Experience coordinating third-party NDT

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work is conducted inside and outside during all-weather types
  • The job is performed under extreme temperature variations and some hazardous conditions
  • Walking, climbing, standing, sitting, and lifting are required
  • Tasks may involve moderate to heavy physical labor

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing on ladders and platforms, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling throughout an 8-12 hour day
  • Ability to work with hands and perform routine lifting, up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand for extended periods of time.
