Our Pekin campus produces products destined for Health, Home& Beauty; Food and Beverage; Industry & Agriculture; Essential Ingredients; and Renewable Fuels markets. All personnel are responsible for the safety of these products, which includes participation in training, following cGMP and feed/food safety requirements in the facility, and following procedures per instruction of management.
Job Purpose: Administers and enforces governmental policies and programs related to employee safety, and OSHA compliance at Alto Ingredients’ facilities.
The following is a list of major duties and responsibilities for this position along with certain supportive duties. It is not all-inclusive. Other duties and responsibilities may be added as needed and in addition, management may modify this job description as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Coordinate and administer established safety trainings and ensure that all programs, policies, and procedures are understood and properly followed. Coordinates and facilitates all new hire safety training and issues safety equipment for position. Lead and/or audit departmental toolbox topics and assist managers with improvements.
• Performs contractor safety training and annual renewals including maintaining all contractor training records.
• Performs regular inspections of safety-related equipment including but not limited to first aid kits, eyewash/safety showers, ladders, man overboard alarms, sharps containers, LOTO stations, etc. Coordinates or assists other departments in coordinating equipment inspections such as fall protection, lifting/jacking equipment, and electrical PPE such as gloves and hot sticks on the proper frequency.
• Maintain the safety supply inventory to keep the safety supply storerooms stocked using various vendors with attention to cost as well as supply availability.
• Support the industrial hygiene testing program including coordinating or performing regular testing such as hexavalent chromium or legionella testing.
• Support the respiratory safety program including respiratory hazard assessments and coordinating annual fit testing and medical evaluations.
• Support the hearing conservation program including maintaining current employee and new hire audiograms and ongoing testing records.
• Maintain the Hazcom SDS program to include creating department specific manuals and online system updates.
• Perform technical analysis of process and specific job functions. Recommend necessary modifications to improve safety performance and maintain proper equipment operation. Perform job hazard analysis and PPE assessments. Assist with other hazard analyses such as dust hazard analysis and process hazard analysis, as needed.
• Participate in the development, implementation and management of company practices to assure the safety and security of the manufacturing facilities, community and staff.

• Assist with the maintenance of plant radios including batteries, microphones, base stations, repeaters, and do repairs or schedule repairs through our vendor as needed.
• Review hot work, confined space, line opening, critical safety device impairment, and SWP’s for deficiencies and coordinate with Safety Manager.
• Assist Site Safety Manager with internal and 3rd party audits and assessments, as needed, including tracking assigned tasks to completion.
• Regularly attend and participate in the Site Safety Committees as well as recording and producing the notes from the meetings. Coordinate safety committee audits as well as documenting audit results and corrective actions.
• Investigate and analyze incidents and unsafe acts, determine contributing factors or cause(s), and recommend required corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
• Assist with Safety Awareness Week activities planning & execution.
• Adhere to internal company procedures and policies.
• Acts as a liaison with State, Federal and local agencies on safety issues.
Education, Experience and Qualifications:
• Bachelors of Science degree in Safety & Health or Environment or other field and documented safety experience and/or environmental experience in an industrial setting, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience preferred.
• Minimum 1 year internship or experience in a Health and Safety role preferred.
• Interpretation of appropriate Federal regulations and program requirements, as contained in the CFR 29.1910, 29.1926, the Homeland Security Act and related legislation and regulations.
• Experience in a safety role and knowledge of OSHA regulations.
• Preferred to have NFPA 70E, qualified in Fall Protection, Scaffold inspections, First Aid, AED and CPR.
• Ability to develop and provide training to others in technical application.
• Ability to utilize qualitative and quantitative methods to determine safety issues of significance.
• Computer skills related to normal business use, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and additional skills in data management.
• Understating of steps to take to judge the effectiveness of safety improvements, programs and processes.
• Understanding of the methods to examine circumstances of an incident to determine its contributing factors and likely cause(s) as well as identify elements that would reduce or mitigate recurrence.
• Human resource management, including giving and receiving feedback, proper interpersonal communications, writing objective progress and performance evaluations and other related knowledge.
Physical Requirements:
• Lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally up to 10% of the working hours.
• Physical mobility: extensive walking, climbing, stairs, kneeling, stopping, sitting up to the 100% of working hours.
• Standing may be occasionally required for long periods of time, up to 6 hours.
• Telephone and computer use is required, often for more than 50% of the day. Physical dexterity to operate tools, valves, pumps, and heavy equipment is sometimes required, usually less than one time per day.
• Occasional driving may be necessary.
• Sensory requirements; hearing, listening, smelling, touching, speaking, tasting, seeing, distinguishing colors up to 100% of working hours.
• Stationary working required up to 100% of working hours.
• Regularly required to work in hot and cold environments. Up to 130 degrees F and below zero degrees F.
