Position Summary:

NWH is the premier Hardwood Lumber producer in the industry serving furniture, cabinet, and molding and millwork segments worldwide. We operate manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. We have an immediate opening for a full time Safety Coordinator servicing 3 manufacturing sites in Bryron Center, MI, Hamilton, MI, and Elkhart, IN. Candidate must live close to Byron Center, MI.

Safety Coordinator’s Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Completes and complies with Federal, state, and local environmental testing.
  • Assists in employees’ training safety procedures as needed.
  • Inspects working conditions to ensure all products and activities are compliant with safety guidelines.
  • Works directly with manufacturing employees to ensure safety programs are implemented and followed.
  • Participate in relevant site meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Suggests revisions to production methods (JSA) and employee activity that does not meet health and safety codes.
  • Participates with local level safety committees.
  • Maintains EHS reporting (Radar, Near-miss, Spills, etc.).
  • Maintains critical task logs (lock-out, tag outs, SDS sheets, Airborne Pathogens, etc.
  • Investigate accidents that occur onsite and identify possible causes of the accident.
  • Manages employee discomforts, workplace injuries, and processes workers compensation documentation.
  • Works with legal department to address any health and safety-related lawsuits.
  • Manages workplace noise level compliance and Audio testing.
  • Maintain documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents, and related events.
  • Act as a liaison between management and external safety agencies, such as fire and insurance personnel.
  • Understand EPA requirements and testing pertaining to air and water quality at each site. Support all required environmental permitting at sites in region.
  • Manage NWH’s contractor safety program onsite
  • Create and manage annual site training plans
  • Ensure trainings in fall protection, LOTO, and other site-specific trainings are up to date
  • Support safety portion of new hire orientations.
  • Timely travel between three manufacturing sites in Michigan and Elkhart, IN
  • Other tasks and assignments as requested

Safety Coordinator’s Basic Qualifications:

  • Exhibits knowledge of appropriate emergency protocols.
  • Minimum 3-5 years as a Safety Coordinator in Manufacturing
  • 2 years or a 4-year degree in Health, Safety and Environmental discipline preferred
  • Demonstrates broad knowledge of state and federal safety guidelines for the workplace.
  • Possesses knowledge of legal repercussions of workplace accidents.
  • Can read and interpret federal OHSA documents.
  • Proficient in excel and Microsoft tools
  • Able to spend at least 25% of time on manufacturing floor. Able to walk up and down stairs and carry up to 20lbs.

  • Demonstrates ability to remain calm and cool-headed in the event of an emergency.

Travel:

  • Travel up to 10%. Timely travel between three manufacturing sites in Byron Center, MI, Hamilton, MI and Elkhart, IN.
