Healthcare Life Safety & Regulatory Compliance Specialist (1099 Contract)

Nationwide Assignments | Travel Required | Acute Care Healthcare Experience Required

Vanguard Resources, Inc. (VRI) is seeking experienced healthcare compliance professionals for future Healthcare Life Safety & Regulatory Compliance Specialist contract opportunities across the United States. These project-based assignments are ideal for seasoned healthcare facilities and compliance professionals who bring deep expertise in Life Safety Code compliance, regulatory readiness, Environment of Care programs, construction compliance, and accreditation preparation within acute care settings.

As an Independent Contractor (1099), you will provide high-level subject matter expertise to healthcare facilities supporting Life Safety compliance initiatives, survey preparedness, deficiency management, documentation review, and regulatory readiness efforts. Assignments typically range from 3 to 6 months and may support existing VRI client sites, new account transitions, construction and renovation projects, regulatory audits, and targeted compliance initiatives.

  

Position Overview

The Healthcare Life Safety & Regulatory Compliance Specialist serves as a trusted subject matter expert in Life Safety Code compliance and healthcare regulatory standards. This role supports acute care healthcare facilities in maintaining ongoing compliance with CMS, The Joint Commission (TJC), DNV, NFPA, and other applicable regulatory authorities.

  

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct Life Safety and Environment of Care assessments, inspections, and gap analyses 
  • Support regulatory readiness and accreditation survey preparation activities 
  • Review Life Safety drawings, documentation, and compliance records for accuracy and completeness 
  • Identify, document, track, and support resolution of Life Safety deficiencies and corrective actions 
  • Manage fire and smoke barrier inspection programs, documentation, and compliance reporting 
  • Support Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) during construction, renovation, and maintenance projects 
  • Review construction and renovation activities for compliance with applicable Life Safety and      healthcare codes 
  • Assist with fire drills, emergency preparedness exercises, and compliance audits 
  • Prepare detailed reports, risk assessments, and regulatory documentation for leadership review 
  • Collaborate closely with facilities leadership, contractors, and project teams to ensure sustained      compliance and readiness 

  

Travel & Assignment Information

  • Project assignments typically range from 3–6 months 
  • Opportunities may be located anywhere within the United States 
  • Comprehensive onboarding and orientation to the Vanguard Way will be provided 
  • Relocation is not required/nor is necessary
  • Travel from your home base to assigned project sites is required 
  • Typical schedules may include  Monday–Friday on-site assignments with weekend travel home, or other client-driven schedules as needed; could modify possibly to work 4x10's

Requirements

  

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required; technical training or college education preferred 
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent experience in an acute care healthcare environment 
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Life Safety, Environment of Care, regulatory compliance, facilities management,      construction, safety, or healthcare operations 

  

Life Safety & Regulatory Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of NFPA Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and related standards (NFPA 99, NFPA 70, NFPA 25) 
  • Familiarity with The Joint Commission Environment of Care (EC) and Life Safety (LS) standards 
  • Understanding of CMS Conditions of Participation related to life safety and emergency preparedness 
  • Awareness of hospital fire protection systems (fire alarms, sprinklers, suppression systems), including basic operational      understanding 

  

Core Compliance Experience

Experience supporting or performing:

  • Life Safety rounds and Environment of Care inspections 
  • Fire door and barrier management 
  • Fire drill coordination and documentation 
  • Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM) implementation 
  • Construction-related ILSM / ICRA coordination 
  • Life Safety deficiency tracking and corrective action      follow-up 

  

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy      
  • Ability to manage multiple compliance priorities in a fast-paced hospital environment 
  • Ability to interpret floor plans, life safety drawings, and facility documentation 
  • Strong ability to work independently while coordinating across departments 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) 
  • Experience with CMMS systems (work order tracking and compliance documentation tools) 

  

Regulatory & Compliance Responsibilities

Supports compliance with:

  • The Joint Commission (EC and Life Safety standards) 
  • CMS hospital regulations 
  • OSHA workplace safety standards 
  • State and local fire marshal requirements 

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with regulatory surveys and inspections 
  • Maintaining accurate life safety documentation, logs, and corrective action tracking 
  • Supporting life safety and survey readiness      initiatives 

  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications such as CHFM, CHSP, CHC, CFPS,      CLSS-HC, or similar healthcare compliance credentials 
  • Prior hospital facilities or engineering department      experience strongly preferred 
  • Experience with construction coordination in healthcare environments (ICRA/ILSM processes) 
  • Experience supporting fire protection system inspection coordination 
  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms (e.g., TMS, FMS, ServiceNow, Hippo, etc.) 
  • Experience participating in accreditation surveys or regulatory inspections

Additional Requirements

Selected candidates must be able to:

  • Complete W-9 documentation prior to assignment 
  • Pass background screening, drug testing, and required      health screenings 
  • Comply with client vaccination and immunization  requirements 
  • Sign confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements 
  • Travel as needed and work flexible schedules based on  assignment requirements
