The Safety Specialist is primarily responsible for preventing accidents in business and job sites. The Safety Specialist is also responsible for making sure different workplaces meet safety and health requirements, with particular attention to regulatory compliance, and then apply corrective measures, when necessary. The Safety Specialist creates trainings and informs on company policies, investigates accidents, and implements post-injury follow-up. A desired candidate is always looking out for the company’s greatest assets, its employees, by ensuring safety precautions are always being trained on and followed. Key duties of the role include: (i) conductions daily site inspections, (ii) reviewing and recommending changes to the company’s safety protocols, (iii) working with Human Resources on training initiatives, (iv) investigating accidents/incidents, and (v) documenting all the aforementioned.


Responsibilities 

Ensure state, local, and federal safety law are being observed

Perform regular site visits to ensure compliance with safety protocols

Review accident reports and follow-up, as necessary

Oversee physical security equipment

Determine unsafe conditions and provide action plan to create safe working environment

Update and maintain annual safety training report

Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures

Report on health and safety awareness, issues, and statics

Provide building support, as necessary

Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention

Perform other related duties as assigned or required

Some travel required (up to 20%)

 

  • Site Inspections & Risk Management: Conduct daily site inspections to identify hazards, assess risks, and enforce safety compliance.
  • Safety Training: Develop and deliver safety training programs, including OSHA 10-hour training and, daily, site-specific safety briefings.
  • Compliance & Documentation: Ensure compliance with OSHA and local regulations, maintain safety manuals, and report incidents.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents and near misses to determine root causes, create reports, and implement corrective actions.
  • Subcontractor Coordination: Review and approve subcontractor safety plans and job hazard analyses. 

  

Key Responsibilities of a Safety Specialist in Construction

  • Safety Policies: Implement, uphold, and modify safety policies.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Monitor equipment and ensure it's in safe working order.
  • Emergency Plans: Update and manage contingency plans.
  • Investigation: Conduct  investigations after accidents.
  • Safety Meetings: Organize regular safety meetings

 

Experience: Previous experience in construction safety or a similar role.

Knowledge: Strong knowledge of OSHA construction safety regulations and building codes.

Certification: Preferred certifications include: Certified Safety Specialist (CSM), OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety Card, Asbestos Training, CPR/BLS/AED 

Communication: Strong ability to communicate safety protocols to staff, management, and subcontractors.

Leadership: Experience leading safety teams and fostering a safety-first culture. 

Requirements

Valid driver’s license

Bachelor’s degree

3+ years of relevant safety experience

Always prepared to provide safety support and training to field technicians

Understanding of legal health and safety guidelines

Able to produce reports and develop relevant policies

Excellent written and verbal communication 

Plan safety trainings

Detail-oriented

Able to work independently with little supervision


Preferred

Knowledge of fire systems and tools

OSHA Certification

CSA Certification

NICET Certification

Experience in OHSHA, MSHA, DOT, and EPA regulatory requirements
