Position Summary

The Empowerment Program is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and trauma-informed Evening Peer Specialist / Building Safety Coordinator for Beldame. In this vital 40-hour-per-week evening role, you will blend direct peer support with facility safety and oversight.

As a Peer Specialist, you will draw upon your lived experience with mental health, substance use recovery, or navigating supportive housing systems to empower participants on their journeys toward stability, self-sufficiency, and personal growth. Simultaneously, you will ensure a secure, welcoming, and orderly environment during evening hours by monitoring building access, securing entry points, performing safety walkthroughs, and appropriately responding to emergencies.

This position complies with Colorado Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) and Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) guidelines to support Medicaid-billable peer support services.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Peer Support & Participant Engagement (Primary Focus)
  • Empowerment & Advocacy: Provide peer-led, trauma-informed, and gender-responsive support to Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) participants, honoring participant autonomy and self-determination.
  • Goal Support & Action Planning: Assist participants in identifying personal goals, connecting with community resources, and utilizing coping strategies aligned with their support plans.
  • Medicaid Documentation: Maintain timely, accurate, and professional clinical documentation (such as progress notes and service logs) in accordance with HCPF and BHA standards to support Medicaid billing requirements.
  • Crisis De-escalation & Support: Utilize peer principles, motivational interviewing, and de-escalation techniques to support participants experiencing acute distress, collaborating closely with clinical team members.
  1. Building Safety & Operations
  • Access Control & Monitoring: Monitor building entry points, secure exterior doors during evening hours, and manage visitor sign-ins/protocols to maintain a safe environment for all residents.
  • Facility Walkthroughs: Conduct routine safety checks of common areas, hallways, and perimeter zones to identify maintenance, safety, or security concerns.
  • Emergency Response: Act as the primary on-site evening point of contact for urgent situations; appropriately assess incidents and contact local authorities, emergency medical services, or crisis response teams as needed.
  • Incident Reporting: Document and report safety incidents, maintenance issues, and policy violations accurately according to agency protocols.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

  • Lived Experience & Certification: Must possess active certification as a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) or equivalent state-recognized peer credential in Colorado (or the ability to obtain certification within a designated timeframe). Must be willing to transparently draw upon personal lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use recovery, or homelessness to connect with participants.
  • Experience with PSH Populations: Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, trauma, severe mental illness, or substance use disorders.
  • Compliance & Billing Knowledge: Understanding of, or familiarity with, Colorado Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) guidelines and Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) regulations regarding Medicaid documentation and service delivery.
  • Safety & Crisis Management Skills: Strong judgment and composure under pressure, with proven ability to handle building safety protocols, security checks, and emergency responses calmly and effectively.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong commitment to trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and gender-responsive support.

Preferred:

  • Experience working specifically within Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) or residential facility settings.
  • Bilingual or multilingual capabilities.
  • First Aid / CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and Medicaid documentation standards.
