Air Quality Specialist Trainee (Environmental Trainee)

The Air Quality Specialist Trainee (Environmental Trainee) position with the Department of Environmental Protection offers a great opportunity to begin a career focused on protecting air quality. This position supports the Air Quality Program by assisting with inspections, complaint investigations, and data review while completing a structured training program. You will help ensure that air quality standards are met and that environmental concerns are addressed effectively. As an Air Quality Specialist Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

• Inspection Support: Assist with on-site reviews of facilities to observe operations and document compliance
• Complaint Response: Help investigate air quality complaints and prepare written summaries of findings
• Data Entry: Update information in tracking systems and review emission data for accuracy
• Sampling Assistance: Support sampling efforts by collecting materials and observing stack testing activities
• Asbestos Review: Help evaluate notifications and support inspections of demolition and asbestos projects
• Program Learning: Participate in training, meetings, and field activities to develop knowledge of air quality regulations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, 1 in-office day required per month. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
• Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Special Requirements:

• This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
